I made sure I got my mother to her polling place today. She has been anticipating the election for days. She can’t remember when America has ever been so mean, and she can’t stand Trump.
She ran for City Council in her old home town many years ago — and won on the strength of 16 absentee ballots. She knows how important votes are.
She has been a life-long Republican — but she’s not a slave to the party line. Some years ago she stopped at the GOP booth at the county fair, and let them know how upset she was about the Republican stand on abortion.
Today after she cast her vote, we were stopped by a reporter from the Wall Street Journal. She told him she voted straight Democratic across the ballot — and she’d never done that before. She also told him she didn’t vote for Trump in 2016.
She said she thinks the country wasn’t ready for a woman president. And then she asked “Will the country ever be ready for a woman president?”
(No idea if any of that will make it into the WSJ.)
She couldn’t vote against Trump today, but God willing she will in 2020 — if Trump is still around and she’s still able to cast a vote.
